IN RUGBY, WHY IS IT BETTER TO STEP BACK TO CONVERT A TRY?

Goal kicking in rugby is a full body movement full of angles, balance, strength and timing. As all rugby specialists know, the best way to convert a try is to move backwards to open up the angle, even if this means taking a longer kick. But where and how should you move backwards? The facts are as follows: a rugby pitch is 70 m wide and the goalposts are 5.60 m apart. On a given vertical line, from point A with coordinates (x, y) (that is varying y), we need to find the maximum angle α at which we can see the goalposts. For simplicity’s sake, we can assume that the poles are points B and C with coordinates (−1,0) and (0,1), which is equivalent to dividing all distances by the half of 5.6, i.e., 2.8. We want to express α as a function of x and y in order to optimize it.
